  • I'm going to answer your bolding question here, rather than over in the Favicon thread, since it really has nothing to do with the Favicon.

The bolding was an effort to make the link text achieve reasonable contrast ratio. Some color combinations won't pass contrast ratios guidelines unlesss you bold the text. Since my earlier estimate of Thanksgiving for getting rid of the purple was based on keeping bolding around, this is now a little bit more than an after-pumpkin pie tweak. I'm going to have to do a bit of remixing here. Fortunately, I asked around yesterday before everyone decamped for the holiday, and I've got a bit of leeway with colors.

So lemme spin the color wheels a few times, and we'll probably find that the bolding won't be necessary. Stay tuned to this thread over the long weekend. I'll jump back in when I've got something for you to look at! :)

    • Thanks. It's not a big deal so no rush. The bold font is great for the main page but I didn't realize it was across all articles. It was pointed out to me, and I concur, that in some areas like the infobox for one, it kinda washes out the other text, making it easily overlooked. Application of the bold text can be applied where needed, but imo bolding each link is a bit much.

Sure. I at least check in once a day, across my communities so I'll be around.

  • Heya :) Happy Thanksgiving :)

I just uploaded a new favicon for ya! :) It might take a li'l while (up to 24 hours) for it to fully propagate on all pages, so you can just go here to see what it'll look like.

Lemme know if you'd like adjustments.

    • Hello and Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.

      It looks great! Thank you.

I don't think any adjustments are needed.

(I do have a question, unrelated to the favicon though. Links in articles and elsewhere, is the bold font necessary? In some instances it kinda blasts out the surrounding text, especially in the infobox. Not urgent but was curious if the bold formatting is up for removal.)

  • One of the great things you've done here at Runaways is that you've tried to build a reasonable category tree. Though a little tedious, it's so important to a number of different FANDOM features -- not least of which is the Mobile Main Page (MMP). I'm not sure if you've ever given it much thought before, but what it does is replace the desktop main page with something that's much more friendly to phones.

The practical effect? We can have a carefully designed and original desktop main page while also giving mobile readers something that works well for them.

So today I started your MMP, something that largely leverages your category tree. If you don't have a phone, you can see an approximation by making your browser window as narrow as possible and then clicking this: http://runaways.wikia.com/wiki/Runaways_Wiki?useskin=mercury. (It's important to make your window as narrow as possible, else the images will be stretched out and highly pixellated.)

If you've never heard of the MMP before, I encourage you to read Help:Mobile Main Page, and to watch the video at w:c:connect:Mercury from the 57'30" mark. It'll give you some more details about how to present Runaways on the MMP. It's a lot easier to change then the desktop main page, so you'll probably find yourself changing it a lot as the season progresses.

Lemme know if you have questions about any of this!

    • Thanks! I've heard of it though it's been in the back of my mind; it's just not been pertinent to my scope of things. I'm aware that FANDOM's users do interact with mobile devices and such, I think the last percentage I saw was somewhere was in the ~53% range or something.

Personally, I despise anything with a "mobile-interface", (not just with FANDOM). I find the layouts cumbersome and difficult to use in most situations and I actively avoid them and use "desktop" modes on mobile browsers, especially with FANDOM while editing. With that said though, and the traffic that mobile users do bring to FANDOM and hopefully to Runaways, I'll be sure to comb through this information and hopefully build an easy to navigate mobile main page. Given other things, other wiki's I'm actively on and personal things, I'm not sure when I'll tackle this, but I'll give it some attention soon.

    • Well, there's no great pressure. You only have 67 pages right now, and almost all of those can be reached from the MMP as it currently stands. But it's just something you'll want to think about as the season progresses.

Just keep it tucked away in the brain that most people have no idea how to use the full site on their phones -- or if they do, our data suggests only a tiny fraction are actually doing it. The MMP is an easy-to-use thing, once you get used to it. It requires no coding whatsoever, and you can edit it on any device. So it's something you can change even when you're on a commute, at school or work -- wherever.

    • I'm sorry! I was going to add the Wikipedia Creative Commons template I usually see on some pages on Wikis that are taken from Wikipedia to awknowledge both that the page was from Wikipedia and to source the authors of the info.

    • Either way is fine, as long as attribution is given.

There's already a template, so feel free to use that or just reference the link, like I added the source.

  • Hi there Bennett Blood! My name is Jamie and I'm on the Community Development team over at FANDOM. I believe you just became an admin here! Congrats! We'd like to help out and spiff up this wiki if that's ok with you. We're meant to get official assets so we'll be able to design a wordmark, skin and some other elements on the main page as well as probably help out with some content. Let me know what you think!

    • Hey, my bad, but I didn't fully explain one of the design principles of the main page. We're trying to keep the right and left columns reasonably close to the same length. By adding one more discussion post and two more episodes, it really threw things out of whack. So I rolled those back.

Length is also important to the way the page shows up on tablets. If you make massively long modules, particularly on the right column, the base code will "break" the module into two halves, and it won't look right. I'm currently doing a few fixes for tablet widths, and it's important to keep the design basically "as is" while this happens.

If you want to have the "welcome to discussions" message that you created in the module, you can just delete it and repost a new version of it, and it'll push one of mine out of rotation. In fact, I encourage you to start several new posts to get rid of mine. Obviously, the three eps that have already been released are fertile ground for new discussions.

Remember, too, that this module is merely meant as a highlight of new discussions activity. It's not meant to be anything close to a complete listing of all posts. Another instance, which allows for many more posts to be featured, is available on the left side of the Fan Feed section.

    • I wasn't aware. Thanks for the information about Tablet length so it's cool. On other wikis that I manage, for the Discussions rail, we use 4, so out of habit, I was doing the same. Once I get around to watching the new episodes, I'll probably make a few posts in that regard.
